Vitamin D Supplements: Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to your health, you need to be as informed as possible. Before taking supplements, read our BetterYou FAQs to ensure you know what you need. Here are some frequently asked questions about vitamin D supplements.

What are the Benefits of Taking Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine” vitamin, a vital nutrient for many areas of the body. The benefits of vitamin D include:

  • Supporting muscle function
  • Encouraging bone health
  • Bolstering immune health
  • Supporting conception
  • Contributing to teeth strength
  • Promoting good mood

What are the Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency?

If you don’t have enough of essential nutrients, you may experience vitamin D deficiency. This can contribute to side effects which are detrimental to your health. The signs of low vitamin D include:

  • Aching bones
  • Weak muscles
  • Feeling low
  • Constant coughs and colds
  • Gut problems

What is the Difference Between the Vitamin D Sprays?

The difference between the sprays in our range of vitamin D supplements is the dosage level provided. The different colours of the spray bottles are not related to flavours.

What is the Recommended Daily Dosage of Vitamin D?

We recommend a vitamin D dosage level based on body weight. We advise supplementation of 1000IU of vitamin D per 25kg of body weight.

This usually equates to one spray of D3000 per day for adults living in the UK. For children our D400 Infant and D400 Junior products provide ideal daily dosage levels.

Are There Any Contraindications with Taking Vitamin D Sprays?

There are no interactions with taking the single nutrient vitamin D oral sprays with any medication. However, if you are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) we do not recommend the spray containing vitamin D and vitamin K, unless on the advice of your doctor.

We always recommend speaking to your GP before starting any dietary supplements if you are on any medications or have any medical conditions.

Is Vitamin D Infant Spray Suitable for Newborns?

Yes. The D400 Infant has been specially formulated to provide 400iu (10µg), the Government recommended dose, in a pure and simple oil based solution. D400 Infant is suitable as a baby supplement for an infant. This is providing they are not consuming more than 500ml of fortified infant formula daily.

Do I Need to Stop Supplementing Before Checking My Vitamin D Levels?

There is no right or wrong answer to this. If you are currently taking a vitamin D supplement and want to check the impact of your supplementation routine, then you can take the vitamin D test straight away.

However, if you’re looking to discover your ‘baseline’ vitamin D levels (diet and lifestyle alone), then we would recommend a ‘wash-out’ period of 4-6 weeks, as this is around how long 25(OH)D (vitamin D) stays in the body.

What is the Source of D3 in Your Vitamin D Oral Sprays?

The vitamin D3 contained in the majority of our vitamin D sprays is sourced from Lanolin, which is the wool from a sheep.

While the D3 in our D1000 Vegan Vitamin D Oral Spray is sourced from algae and is vegan approved by the Vegetarian Society.

What is the Plant Source of the Vegan Vitamin D3?

We use Vitamin D3V® as our vegan D3 which is sourced from algae.

While we are unable to share the exact plant source due to the innovative and proprietary nature of the ingredient, it is a vegan-friendly supplement which is fully registered with the Vegan Society. As vitamin D is found in oily fish, eggs and dairy products, they are supplements vegans should take in order to help bridge the gap of nutrients which may be a result of their diet.

Are the Vitamin D Sprays Suitable for Special Dietary Requirements?

Does your Vitamin D Test Show 'Active' or 'Storage' Vitamin D?

The blood spot kits measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which reflects body vitamin D stores. This is generally accepted to be the most useful indicator of vitamin D status.

The active form is 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D but this is only measured in very few, rare clinical situations. It is also very unstable and difficult to measure so only a few labs in the country do actually measure it.

Are There Any Contraindications with Taking Vitamin D+K2?

Due to the high levels of vitamin K2 in the D+K2 oral spray we recommend that if you are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) you do not take this product, except on the advice of your doctor.

How Long Will the Vitamin D Oral Spray Last?

Vitamin D Oral Sprays contain 100 sprays per bottle. If you are using the recommended dosage of one spray per day, it will last 100 days.

The Vitamin D+K2 Oral Spray contains 90 sprays per bottle. Requiring 3 sprays daily, and will last 30 days.

Foods which contain vitamin D include:

  • Oily fish (tuna, mackerel, salmon)
