Iron

Iron

An essential mineral important in making red blood cells, iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, supports a healthy immune system and normal cognitive function.

Iron in the body

Iron is a vital component of haemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to transport it throughout your body.

Haemoglobin represents about two-thirds of the body’s iron. If you don’t have enough iron, your body can’t make enough healthy oxygen-carrying red blood cells.

A lack of iron within the body can cause tiredness and fatigue, shortness of breath and heart palpitations.

Sources of Iron

We can get iron from both animal foods and plant sources. Common food sources include:

  • Meats (beef, pork, chicken and veal)
  • Fish (halibut, haddock, perch, salmon, tuna)
  • Shellfish
  • Dark leafy greens (spinach, kale)
  • Fortified foods and cereals
  • Beans and lentils

Not all dietary iron is absorbed equally, heme and non-heme sources of iron can impact uptake, as can digestive inefficiencies and even the polyphenols present in tea and coffee can impact your absorption.

Who needs iron?

Everyone needs iron to be healthy, but there are groups of people that are especially susceptible to iron deficiency.

Pregnant Women

Athletes

Those with malabsorption issues

Vegetarians and Vegans

Women who have heavy periods

The trouble with traditional iron supplementation

Taking an iron supplement can be one of the quickest ways to raise your levels and reap the benefits of iron, especially if you follow a restricted diet (vegan/vegetarian).

However, traditional routes of iron supplementation including tablets, capsules and liquids are notoriously known to cause digestive discomfort as iron is an irritant to the digestive tract. They can leave iron deposits in the liver, stomach and large intestines, causing irritation.

As a result, there can be several negative side effects on the body when supplementing in this way including constipation, sickness, stomach pains, bloating and heart burn.

How do iron oral sprays work?

BetterYou’s Iron Oral Sprays is absorbed through the lining inside your mouth, bypassing primary processing by the digestive system.

Each spray delivers tiny droplets of our iron formulation into the soft tissue of the mouth.

These droplets are then absorbed, entering the rich vein system below.

This allows the iron to quickly enter the bloodstream for optimal absorption.
