How to Improve Your Sleep Cycle

Understanding the steps it take to improve your sleep cycle, can help you rest well and perform better. When twenty-five-year old professional cyclist, Emma Grant, underwent surgery on her legs, her recovery suffered due to a lack of sleep. But thanks to transdermal magnesium therapy, Emma’s quality of sleep has improved, putting her back on the path to recovery.

The Oxfordshire-based athlete explains how using a simple magnesium chloride spray and bath flakes has made all the difference to her recovery and her training.

Emma's Story of Improving Her Sleep Cycle

“I was diagnosed with Iliac Artery Endofibrosis, (a narrowing of the artery reducing blood flow to the limbs) in 2015, which meant I suffered from numbness in my legs, which worsened during my training and competing. I recently had surgery to correct this, which was a success.

“However, the first few nights after the operation I really struggled to have a restful night’s sleep. I would wake myself up when I moved as I was still sore from the operation.

“I believe that trauma to the body through surgery depletes magnesium levels, so while in hospital I used BetterYou Magnesium Sleep Body Spray in the evening.

“Not only was this a fast way to replenish my magnesium levels as it was easily absorbed through my skin, but the combined essential oils are really relaxing. I started to feel sleepy straight away after using the spray.

“Ten days after the operation I was allowed to have a bath, so I soaked in Magnesium Flakes, which was a great way to relieve muscle tension.

“At this point I started to feel human again! My body had tensed up so much whilst hobbling around, and I am sure it helped speed up the healing of the incisions too.

“Sleep is the most underrated performance enhancer in my opinion. Sleep deprivation leaves the body and mind feeling quite flat. The perception of effort feels so much higher when you are low on seep.

“As part of my training I bathe in the Flakes post training twice a week. Before bed I use around 20 sprays of the Goodnight Spray on my arms and legs.

“In the past I could be really restless and have muscle twitches on an evening, but magnesium is a natural relaxant and is really calming on the body.

“After using BetterYou transdermal magnesium, I wake up feeling well rested. In the past I could sleep for nine hours and still feel so tired.

“The products have definitely improved the quality of my sleep”.

Experts on Sleep Cycles

Magnesium acts as an aid to muscle tension, cramping and supports restful sleep. The Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine found that when the body’s magnesium levels are too low, it makes it harder to stay asleep.

Research from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge has shown that there is a relationship between our cells’ magnesium levels and the body’s ability to follow its sleep cycle efficiently.

Basically, having the right levels of magnesium in the body means we find it easier to fall asleep and wake up at the right time.
