5 Common Myths about Weight Loss

When it comes to losing weight many myths seem to be going around. Some of them are simply ludicrous while others can be really bad for you if you decide to follow them. No wonder many people get confused when trying to find the best weight loss solution.

Weight loss myths

There is a lot of misinformation and bad advice online. For this reason, it’s important to know what is true and what is a weight loss myth. In this article, we will look at some of the common weight loss myths you may come across and explain why these are not true.

Supplements will help you lose weight

If you look online you will quickly find numerous supplements all making some incredible claims regarding weight loss. Many of them won’t do much for you and some of them may even be dangerous. Most weight loss supplements don’t work and can be taken only for a short period. There are however certain supplements that may be helpful, for example, magnesium.

Magnesium supplements can be a great addition to your weight loss diet as they can help curb sugar cravings so you will be less likely to give in to temptation and eat chocolate, biscuits and other sugary snacks.

Those trying to achieve a flat tummy but who suffer from bloating may also find that turmeric supplements can help them achieve their goals.

Snacking is bad

A common weight loss myth many people will tell you is not to snack between meals. While it’s true that snacking on unhealthy foods such as cakes, chocolate and biscuits will not help you lose weight, snacking on healthy foods is different. It’s actually better if you don’t let yourself get too hungry in between meals as this can easily result in overeating at mealtimes. Snack on healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits, a few nuts, low-fat popcorn and a few spoons of natural yoghurt. Avoid anything which is high in calories and you will still be on track with your weight loss goals.

Night-time eating can cause you to gain weight

This is one of the most common weight loss myths. Many people say that if you eat at night you will gain weight as those are the calories you don’t need whilst sleeping (as you go to sleep) and will just get converted into body fat. The reality is it doesn’t matter when you eat as long as you keep an eye on what you are eating and how much. Indeed, going to bed with a full stomach is not a good idea but if you have one small healthy snack after a healthy dinner (if you still feel hungry), this will be harmless. If you must eat at night, choose healthy, low-calorie foods and only eat if you are hungry. In this way, you should still be able to meet your weight loss goals.

You should avoid fat

Many people believe that if they want to lose weight, they need to avoid all fats and follow a low-fat diet. People think that fat will make them fat. But this is a weight loss myth. There are good fats and bad fats. You should avoid trans fats and avoid consuming too many saturated fats. At the same time, you should include some healthy omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. These are found in fatty fish, avocado and walnuts. Our bodies need some fat to stay healthy and avoiding fats completely is a bad idea.

Yes, there are many low-fat diets and those seem to work for many people but they are not sustainable. The key to tackling weight loss is to make permanent changes to the way you eat and follow a healthy, balanced diet that works for you.

Skipping meals helps you lose weight

Thinking that skipping meals will help you achieve your goal quickly is a weight loss myth. Unless you are doing intermittent fasting, skipping meals is not a good idea. That’s because skipping meals slows down your metabolism and causes your body to go into “starvation mode”. In this mode, the body thinks it is starving and responds accordingly by holding on to fat, making weight loss more difficult. Skipping meals also makes you overeat later on and consume more calories than you would normally in one meal. So it’s certainly not a good idea to skip meals if you want to lose weight. Instead, aim for a healthier lifestyle and eat small balanced meals throughout the day supported with food supplements to boost vitamin levels. Make sure you also drink enough water.

Our Conclusion on Weight Loss Myths

Losing weight is not easy and the truth is it may take some time before you reach your weight loss goal. If you think that taking weight loss supplements will get you there faster, this is not the best way to lose weight. The best way is to become conscious of what you eat and make healthy eating decisions. Try and be more active as well and this will certainly make a difference. Don’t believe all the myths you see online about losing weight. Use your common sense and try to develop healthy lifelong habits that will help you keep the weight off.
