Magnesium

Why does it tingle when I apply it to my skin?

This can happen if the body’s cellular magnesium levels are low. The skin can tingle as the magnesium is sucked through the skin rapidly and as magnesium is a large molecule it can cause this sensation. It is important to remember though that it isn’t an allergic reaction to the magnesium, as it is found naturally within the body and is vital to good health.

Another factor that can influence this reaction is the amount used on one area. We recommend 2-3 sprays in one area and then up to 20 sprays a day. Also if you have dry or broken skin it may heighten the sensation.

This reaction will decrease as your body’s cellular magnesium levels increase.

Transdermal magnesium helps to increase your body’s magnesium levels up to 5 times faster than oral supplementation. To reduce the reaction we recommend the following techniques:-

(1) Apply only 2-3 sprays onto any individual skin area. Massage in well.

(2) Apply after a shower onto wet skin, while pores are open.

(3) Vary the application areas to increase the bodies overall magnesium level.

(4) Little but often is the key. If you just apply one spray that’s fine. Massage it in and wait for a minute or so then try another.

The key is to apply the Magnesium Oil wherever it feels comfortable. The magnesium, once absorbed into the skin, is circulated around the body so there is no direct need to focus just on a single area. However, once your magnesium levels begin to rise you will find areas that were sensitive before are no longer so.

Magnesium Flakes can provide a gentle solution to raising your levels. Added to a bath or foot soak they can provide a lower concentration of the solution that will increase your magnesium levels.

Can I use transdermal magnesium during pregnancy?

Yes. Magnesium is very important during this time for both mother and baby as babies are born with twice as much magnesium as calcium, this is what makes them so flexible and why their skin is so elastic and soft.

However it is important that during pregnancy you avoid essential oils. MagnesiumOil Joint Spray, MagnesiumOil Recovery Spray and MagnesiumOil Goodnight Spray all contain essential oils.

Our pure magnesium products are perfectly suited for during pregnancy. MagnesiumOil Original spray, MagnesiumOil Sensitive spray, Magnesium Flakes, Magnesium Soak, Magnesium Body Butter and Lotion all contain only a pure form of magnesium chloride, which is currently the subject of clinical trial at St Mark’s hospital, Harrow, on behalf of the NHS.

There are no restrictions with dosage level of these products during this time.

I take medication, are there any contraindications?

There are no contraindications with any of our transdermal magnesium products.

Is the magnesium safe to take orally?

Our Magnesium Flakes, MagnesiumOil Original spray and Magnesium Soak are all a pure concentration of magnesium chloride making them perfectly safe to ingest. The purity of our source means that these products are free from man-made pollutants and safe for human consumption, in fact they are regularly used in organic baby food as an alternative to sodium chloride.

However, as magnesium is a natural relaxant, if you take a large dose orally it can have a laxative effect. Using it as a transdermal product means that it avoids processing by the digestive system and so too avoids the laxative effect; therefore you can take larger doses through the skin. We have also found in our trials that transdermal magnesium can increase the body’s magnesium levels up to 5 times faster than oral supplements.

What is the source of the magnesium chloride hexahydrate?

The magnesium chloride is a solution mined in Veendam in the Netherlands. The magnesium chloride is mined from an ancient seabed that has been condensed and purified for over 250 million years. To mine the magnesium chloride spring water is carefully pumped down to dissolve the seam and the solution is simultaneously brought up to the surface. The magnesium chloride concentration is 31%, perfectly stable to avoid recrystalising. The brine solution that is brought to the surface is what is bottled for MagnesiumOil Original spray and Magnesium Soak, nothing is added to it to keep the spray as pure and as universally acceptable as possible.

Can I overdose on magnesium?

You do not need to worry about overdosing when using transdermal magnesium. Upper limits are set when using the product orally as it can have a laxative effect as it is a natural relaxant.

Magnesium needs to be in balance with the calcium in your body, ideally in the range of 1:1 or 2:1.  A modern Western diet unfortunately favours calcium in the ratio of more than 20 times to one on average, so magnesium supplementation is crucial. Looking at this from a cellular level, cells are surrounded by calcium, for the cell to fire it is flooded with calcium. To return to its relaxed state there must be sufficient magnesium within the cell to assist the process of pumping the calcium out. If the cell is deficient in magnesium it cannot keep all the calcium out and so the cell will continue to fire. Due to our reduced intake of magnesium through diet and our increase in calcium it would be extremely difficult to take too high a dose of magnesium through supplementation.

Another factor is that toxic symptoms from increased magnesium intake are not common because the body eliminates excess amounts unless there are serious problems with kidney function. As Mark Sircus has noted in his book Transdermal Magnesium Therapy, in reality problems only tend to occur when magnesium is given intravenously.

What is the difference between the Magnesium Flakes and the Magnesium Soak?

The key difference between Magnesium Soak and Magnesium Flakes is the concentration. Magnesium Soak contains magnesium chloride at 31% concentration while the Magnesium Flakes are at a concentration of 47%.

Magnesium Flakes will provide a higher level of elemental magnesium when added to a bath than Magnesium Soak will. However, for those with skin conditions where the skin is broken Magnesium Soak provides a more gentle option.

What is the difference between the five MagnesiumOil sprays?

The purest MagnesiumOil is the Original spray. This is suitable for anyone including children and during pregnancy. This spray is purely the magnesium chloride brine as it comes out of the ground. It is called an oil due to its hygroscopic quality meaning it acts like an oil. The Original spray is 31% concentrate in magnesium chloride. 10 sprays delivers a minimum of 200mg (57% RDA) of optimally absorbable elemental magnesium.

The Sensitive spray features the same pure magnesium as the Original, but with a concentration of 15% magnesium chloride, it has been dermatologically tested so that you can be 100% confident that it will be kinder to sensitive skin. 10 sprays delivers a minimum of 100mg (28% RDA) of optimally absorbable elemental magnesium.

The Goodnight spray also has added essential oils; bergamot, clary sage, grape seed and chamomile. These give off a calming and relaxing aroma to help aid normal restful sleep. Again adding the essential oils brings the magnesium chloride concentration down to 28%. 10 sprays delivers a minimum of 180mg (51% RDA) of optimally absorbable elemental magnesium.

The Recovery spray has added essential oils; black pepper, camphor and lemon oils. These essential oils have a warming effect and so help to increase blood flow and aid cell detox during and after sport. The added essential oils bring the magnesium chloride concentration down to 28%. Every 10 sprays delivers a minimum of 180mg (51% RDA) of optimally absorbable elemental magnesium.

The Joint spray has added wintergreen and menthol oil for cooling and calming but also delivers 105mg glucosamine to help promote cartilage health.

The pump on my spray has stopped working. What do I do now?

Unfortunately due to the fact are products are natural, occasionally crystallisation can occur in the pump mechanism, preventing it from working. This can often occur if the spray hasn’t been stored at room temperature or hasn’t been used in a while.

This can easily be fixed by removing the pump from the bottle and running it under a warm tap for a few minutes while pressing down on the pump to help remove the blockage.

If this doesn’t work then please contact customerservices@betteryou.com immediately, along with details of the product, your name and address and the batch number printed on the base of the bottle. We will be happy to send you out a replacement pump so you can continue to use your spray.

TotalNutrition

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. The important thing to remember with TotalNutrition is that the ingredients are all food state and food sourced. Therefore it is not something that will have a detrimental effect if you were to give a child a large dose, it would be similar to if they ate one apple or five apples. TotalNutrition is not like a traditional synthetic supplement that contains exactly 100% of your recommended RDA, it is an organic food based product packed full of nutrients that helps to support the body.

As a guide, a teaspoon is a good amount for a daily dose for a two year old child. As a parent you are the best person to decide when your child needs the extra help from their diet so please feel comfortable to increase or decrease the dosage as you see fit.

What can I add TotalNutrition to?

TotalNutrition can be added to a number of foods and drinks to help you obtain a nutritional diet, including porridge, smoothies, pasta and dips.

We developed a recipe booklet with Dale Pinnock, the UK’s most exciting medicinal chef, which shows just how versatile the product is. If you would like to receive a copy please email customerservices@betteryou.com.

Is TotalNutrition suitable for those with dietary requirements?

TotalNutrition is completely vegan and officially approved by the Vegetarian Society. The ingredients used are 100% food sourced and food state, which makes it perfect to use daily.

It is also suitable for those following a diabetic diet.

It is a great product to use when recovering from an illness or for using regularly to promote general good health. So in terms of timescale it would be absolutely fine to use this product every day, increasing the dosage at times when the body is under stress.

How long will a pack last?

Each pack contains 200g of naturally food sourced and food state ingredients. Each scoop is 10g, therefore if one scoop is used daily one tub of TotalNutrition will last you 20 days. We recommend 1-2 scoops as an optimum daily dosage.

Vitamin B12

Is the Boost B12 spray suitable for children?

Boost is perfectly suitable for children and is ideal for those who may not want to or cannot take capsules. For children under 12 years of age we recommend halving the dosage, as their daily supplementation need is lower than that of an adult.

Are there any contraindications with Boost B12 oral spray?

There are no interactions with any other products or medications when using the Boost spray.

What source of B12 is in our B12 Oral Spray?

The vitamin B12 in our Boost spray is methylcobalamin. This has been chosen for its superior cellular absorption and ensures that it can be absorbed straight into the blood stream via the rich vascular system in the cheeks and under the tongue.

Does the Boost B12 spray contain caffeine?

As the Boost spray contains green tea extract it does contain caffeine a natural form of caffeine, however this is a very small amount with just 0.5mg per four sprays.

The purpose of the green tea in the spray is not for this small caffeine element, but that is is a natural preservative as well as being an antioxidant.

A recent study published in The Lancet (June 2016) has also proven that green tea provides a chemical called epigallocatechin gallate, which contributes to improved cognitive function.

Why is chromium added to the Boost B12 spray?

Chromium is another nutrient that is difficult to obtain through diet alone, but has shown to be well absorbed through the mucosal membrane. While B12 and chromium do not need to be taken together, Chromium helps balance blood sugar levels and like B12 helps reduce tiredness and fatigue.

Why is green tea included in the Boost B12 spray?

Green tea is used as a natural preservative as well to reinforce the antioxidant element.

It also provides a chemical called epigallocatechin gallate which contributes to improved cognitive function as proven by a clinical study published in The Lancet (June 2016).

Vitamin D

Does your vitamin D test show ‘active’ or ‘storage’ vitamin D?

The blood spot kits measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which reflects body vitamin D stores. This is generally accepted to be the most useful indicator of vitamin D status.

The active form is 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D but this is only measured in very few, rare clinical situations. It is also very unstable and difficult to measure so only a few labs in the country do actually measure it.

Is the test kit suitable for children?

Yes. The vitamin D test service suitable for all ages including young children and babies.

The test kit requires a small pin prick to the side of the finger be able to collect blood spots for testing. Everything you require is enclosed in the pack, including a plaster and a complimentary DLux oral spray based on individual results.

Can I spray the DLux on to food or drink?

The DLux oral spray range has been formulated to be absorbed through the mucosal membrane within the mouth. We have conducted clinical trials with Cardiff University and found that the most effective area for absorption to be on the inside of the cheek. Our formula within our oral sprays have therefore been specifically made to provide optimal and guaranteed, immediate absorption in this area.

Spraying DLux onto your food or into a drink would mean it is processed by the digestive system rather than going through the mucosal membranes in the mouth.

Are there any contraindications with DLux?

There are no interactions with any medication. However we always recommend speaking to your GP if you are on any medications.

The DLux sprays are also suitable to use alongside all other BetterYou products.

Are the DLux spray suitable for special dietary requirements?

Yes. All the DLux sprays are suitable for vegetarians and are officially approved by the Vegetarian Society. They are also suitable for those following a coeliac or diabetic diet.

The oral spray method also means that they are suitable for those with digestive problems.

I’m taking multiple sprays, should I spread it throughout the day or take them all at once?

This is down to personal preference, either way provides optimal absorption.

Our studies have found that the best place for absorption is inside of the cheek. When using multiple sprays we would recommend spraying in this area.

How long will the DLuxPregnancy spray last?

DLuxPregnancy has 160 sprays in the 25ml bottle. The daily dosage is 5 sprays and so one bottle will last 32 days.

How long will the DLuxJunior spray last?

DLuxJunior has 100 sprays per bottle and so if you are using one spray per day it will last 100 days.

How long will the DLuxInfant spray last?

DLuxInfant has 100 sprays per bottle and so if you are using one spray per day it will last 100 days.

How long will the DLux1000 spray last?

DLux1000 has 100 sprays per bottle and so if you are using one spray per day it will last 100 days.

How long will the DLux3000 spray last?

DLux3000 has 100 sprays per bottle and so if you are using one spray per day it will last 100 days.

What is the difference between the DLux sprays?

The key difference is the dosage level per spray, the different colours are not related to flavours.

DLuxInfant delivers 300IU (7.5µg) per spray and has a natural strawberry flavour.

DLuxJunior delivers 400IU (10µg) per spray and has a natural peppermint flavour.

DLux1000 delivers 1000IU (25µg) per spray and has a natural peppermint flavour.

DLux3000 delivers 3000IU (75µg) per spray and has a natural peppermint flavour.

DLuxPregnancy delivers 1000IU (25µg) of vitamin D per dose (5 sprays) along with the RDA of B1, B6 and Folic Acid and has a natural peach and mango flavour.

What dosage of vitamin D should I take?

We recommend a dosage level based on body weight and advise supplementation of 1000IU of vitamin D per 25kg of body weight.

This usually equates to one spray of DLux3000 per day for adults living in the UK. For children our DLuxInfant and DLuxJunior products provide ideal daily dosage levels.

What is the source of D3 in your DLux products?

The vitamin D3 contained in our DLux sprays is sourced from Lanolin, which is the wool from a sheep. There is no Lanolin found within the product but the process of extracting the D3 from the wool makes this particular product not suitable for those on a vegan diet. We take our product ingredients very seriously and are always researching to find new ways of creating products which are as universally acceptable as possible.

Do I need to take the spray with food or a drink?

No. The oral spray delivery mechanism avoids processing by the digestive system, meaning it can be taken at any time of day with or without food. The active ingredients are delivered directly into the bloodstream via the mucosal membranes in the mouth.
