A well-balanced lifestyle is essential, but it can sometimes be difficult to achieve. We all have responsibilities such as going to work, studying and being depended upon by family members. There are the things we want to do and the things we have to do, but in order for personal growth and efficiency, we must overcome the challenge of balance. Through balance we can achieve peace of mind and live a healthy lifestyle, however if imbalance exists, there can be both negative physical and emotional effects on our health.
One of the best ways to help achieve balance is through exercise and nutrition. These are key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle for both the body and the mind. Exercise shouldn’t be something you feel forced to do, otherwise it can quickly become a chore. So, I’ve put together some useful tips to help you get started and motivate yourself:
Choose an activity you enjoy
If you hate running, don’t run! Exercise doesn’t always mean going to a gym. Whether you are lifting weights, swimming, walking, or even just putting some music on and dancing - as long as you are active and elevating your heart rate, you are doing fine!
Vary your routine
Don’t do the same thing over and over, otherwise you will find yourself bored very quickly. The last thing you want to do is feel like a hamster in a wheel; not heading anywhere, uninterested and demotivated.
Plan fun activities ahead of time, such as hikes, bike rides, or even playing a sport.
Add exercise to your daily routine simply by walking more rather than driving or taking public transport. Go for a brisk walk in your lunch break. Take stairs instead of escalators and lifts. Use your body as much as you can!
Schedule your exercise, just like you would with work or anything else. You wouldn’t wake up in the morning and think ‘I don’t feel like working today so I’ll stay at home’. In the same way, have a workout schedule and stick to it!
As well as exercise, nutrition is just as important and they both go hand in hand. Quality nutrition will keep your body at peak health as well as boosting your energy and spirits!
Make time to eat right
Prep your food in advance so there is always something available. This way if you don’t have much time, you don’t have to resort to eating junk!
Buy fresh and organic
Buy fresh and organic as much as you can. Especially fruits, nuts and vegetables, as these can be good snacks for when you’re on the go!
Make a shopping list of everything you will need for the week and do a food shop. This way you will have everything you need to keep you going, instead of relying on fast food.
Drink lots of water
As well as filling you up, it will also help flush toxins out of your body and maintain hydration; the ultimate drink! Try and consume atleast 2 litres every day.
Indulge every now and then
Like I said, it’s all about balance, so treat yourself to something naughty every now and then. Don’t deprive yourself of the foods you love, as this can lead to cravings and ultimately throw you off track. If you fancy a small piece of chocolate now and then, or that glass of wine on the weekend, go for it! It’s all a balance.
We always hear people say, ‘everything in moderation’ and that is so important. It’s all about that healthy balance, so be smart and enjoy your new, healthier and very balanced life!
