Off the bat, you know you are going to get a different training experience with Mike Mckay, because he is so passionate about the importance of creating functional strength while overcoming your body challenges. Meaning, he wants to fix you, actually fix you, before he rips you. So a first session will run through functional movement screenings where he will watch you in action and assess your areas of weakness. In my case, my ankles of all things lacked mobility, and that was the cause of some of my knee issues. All to say, that it was refreshing to have a trainer that really cared about getting it right. When I couldn’t do a move because of the inexplicable pain that crept into my neck, he went back to his sweet gym in Santa Monica, consulted his fellow LEAF gurus and his training inspirations online, and came back to me with modified moves that worked just as well. Mike is dedicated to healing your injuries and misalignments and developing your strength in a way that does not compound existing injuries. For example, I’m at the computer most of the day, the result is tension in my neck and shoulders and rather than complicate the issue, he suggested I stay away from push ups, and “pushing” in general, and gave me some great “pulling” exercises. I was worked out, and in the end, exhilarated to meet a trainer that took so much time to figure out what my body needed to achieve my fitness goals pain free.
