Neuro…What? That’s what I thought when I booked my appointment with Carmen Wylie, a neurofeedback specialist. At first skeptical, I was immediately at ease because Carmen herself, imparts such a personable and professional approach. Carmen’s background is in skincare, great right? I’m always looking for ways to improve my skin! But as the session progressed she explained how things like stress or depression can show up on your skin and I realized how much thought and health is connected. Neurofeedback delves deeper and will explore and heal the root of your issues and you’ll come away with more than just a pretty face. The opening session starts with an depth medical history. You then discuss your goals for neurofeedback and generally pick a few areas to focus on. While you have one major area of focus (be it weight loss, depression etc) there are side benefits as well. After the medical history and the discussion of goals, the actual neurofeedback begins. Carmen will place electrodes on your head to monitor your brain waves. You then watch a video game that is controlled by your mind (cool right?) and from self regulation with the video game, your brain learns. Take, for example, the video game has a driving car. If your brain is not functioning properly the car will slow down or flip over. If you brain is acting as intended, the car will drive in straight smooth line. I came away feeling excited about this promising new medical practice that can aid in ailments from alcoholism to weight loss to autism. I really appreciate the use of self regulation in the brain as opposed to medication. All in all, neurofeedback is a fascinating treatment that will become more and more prominent and Carmen is a passionate innovator in the field that I’m happy to experience.
